The best free ATS resume checkers: 2026 comparison

An honest comparison of the free ATS resume checkers worth your time: what each one costs, whether you need an account, and what the score actually measures.

Type "free ATS checker" into a search engine and you get five tools that all promise the same score — and behave completely differently once your resume is in. Which one deserves ten minutes of your job search is not obvious from their landing pages.

We compared five ATS checkers against the same four criteria: language support, whether an account is required, how free the free tier really is, and what the score genuinely measures. Honest verdicts throughout, including for our own tool.

Even France Travail recommends the wrong tools

The clearest sign this market confuses people: France's public employment service gets it half right. On its own applicant-tracking page, France Travail's site tells job seekers to test their resume with a free ATS simulator — sound advice — and then names Jobscan, Resume Worded and VMock.

All three are English-only, US-oriented tools, recommended to an audience writing resumes in French. A score from a tool that cannot read your resume properly is worse than no score at all: the method is right, the shortlist is not usable by the people receiving it.

That is why language is the first thing to check, before any feature comparison — and why it is the first of our four criteria below.

Why this comparison exists

"Free ATS checker" covers two very different products. Some tools grade your resume on its own — layout, sections, phrasing. Others grade it against a specific job posting. Both are useful, but they answer different questions, and most comparisons never say which one you are getting.

The second gap is money. Plenty of tools give away a number and put everything that would let you act on it behind a subscription. A score with no explanation is a cliffhanger, not a diagnosis.

The four criteria

That last criterion matters most. A score computed without a job posting measures structure and parseability — what actually breaks there is visible in our Canva resume test, where the same content parses or scrambles depending on the layout. A score computed with a posting measures keyword and requirement overlap. Knowing which you are reading is the difference between a useful signal and a random number.

The comparison at a glance

Tool Language What the score measures
HiredFolio English / French Resume-to-job match + format
Jobscan English Resume-to-job match
Resume Worded English Structure, phrasing, impact
CVcrea French Impact, clarity, relevance, design
AttractiveCV French Content, structure, keywords

Verdicts, tool by tool

HiredFolio

Our ATS checker runs without an account: drop a PDF (8 MB max), paste the job posting you are targeting, and you get a score out of 100 in about thirty seconds. The resume is analysed and then deleted.

HiredFolio

The only checker here that scores a French or English resume against a real posting with no account — as long as you have a posting to score against.

Strengths

No sign-up for the score, computed against a real posting rather than in the abstract. Works on French resumes with a French interface, which is rarer than it should be.

Limits

The job posting is mandatory, so it cannot check layout alone. Anonymous scans capped at five a day; the detailed report — exact keywords to add, AI-rewritten bullets — needs a free account.

Best for: someone with a specific job in mind who wants to know whether this resume fits that posting. Checked August 2026.

Jobscan

Jobscan popularised the idea that a resume should be tested against a posting rather than graded in isolation, and its match report is precise and well explained.

Jobscan

The reference for word-by-word matching against a posting — if your search fits inside five free scans a month.

Strengths

The method, and the quality of the explanation: it tells you which requirements you missed and why they matter.

Limits

Account required. The free plan stops at five scans a month, which disappears fast in an active search; Premium is around $50/month at the monthly rate. English-only, product and advice alike.

Best for: an English-language application where you are willing to pay, or a search slow enough to live inside five scans a month. Checked August 2026.

Resume Worded

Resume Worded gives a free score and lets you re-upload as many times as you want, which makes it pleasant to iterate against.

Resume Worded

The strongest feedback on phrasing and impact — behind an account wall, and for English resumes only.

Strengths

Feedback leans on phrasing and the impact of your bullet points — a genuinely complementary angle to pure keyword matching. Unlimited free re-tests.

Limits

It states plainly that it handles English resumes only, and you have to create an account before you see anything at all.

Best for: an English resume you want to tighten line by line. Checked August 2026.

CVcrea

CVcrea offers a free, repeatable ATS test in French that does not require a job posting. The score breaks down into four axes: impact, clarity, relevance and design.

CVcrea

The most generous no-sign-up option in French — with the built-in limit of every no-posting checker.

Strengths

Zero friction: drop the file, get a structural diagnosis immediately, and repeat as often as you like.

Limits

Without a posting, "relevance" is necessarily a generic estimate — it cannot know which keywords are missing for the role you want. Parts of the editor behind it are subscription-only.

Best for: a first pass on a French resume, before you have targeted specific jobs. Checked August 2026.

AttractiveCV

AttractiveCV positions itself as a fully French simulator and grades content, structure, keywords and readability.

AttractiveCV

A French second opinion whose free tier tells you that something is wrong more easily than what.

Strengths

The vocabulary is tuned to the French market, so the remarks land better than a translated US tool's would. The score itself is openly accessible.

Limits

The familiar split: the score is free, the tailored recommendations sit behind the PRO subscription.

Best for: a second French opinion to cross-check against another test. Checked August 2026.

How to read an ATS score without fooling yourself

None of these tools is the actual applicant tracking system used by the company you are applying to. They simulate typical behaviour: extract the text, identify the sections, compare against the posting's terms.

Three habits worth keeping:

  1. Do not chase 100. A very high score usually means a resume stuffed with keywords, which will read badly to the human who opens it next.
  2. Run the same resume through two tools. A real problem — unreadable sections, contact details not detected — shows up everywhere. An isolated gap between two scores is usually a difference in scoring method.
  3. Re-test after fixing, not before. The number is only worth anything as a before-and-after measurement.

For what these systems actually read and how to structure your resume accordingly, our in-depth guide covers how to get past the automatic filters.

Our recommendation

If you are applying to a specific posting, start with a tool that compares your resume to that posting — it is the only way to see which keywords are missing. If you just want to confirm your resume parses cleanly, a no-posting checker does the job better and faster.

And if you are writing in a language other than English, check the language before anything else — the France Travail example above shows how easily even good advice skips that step.

Using HiredFolio

Drop your resume, paste the job posting, and get your ATS score in about thirty seconds — no sign-up, no credit card.

Key takeaways before you pick a checker

01

Decide what you want measured first: your resume alone (structure, parseability) or your resume against a specific posting (keywords). Pick the tool after.

02

Check the language before the features — an English-only checker scoring a French resume gives you a number worth nothing.

03

Use the score as a before-and-after measurement: fix, re-test, compare — never chase 100.
