# How Long Should a Resume or CV Be? (2026): 1 vs 2 Pages, Measured

> One page or two? How many words fit on a page, who enforces a page limit (we checked 6,383 postings, then 701 in the UK), what NIH and NSF now cap in academic CVs, and what our scorer counts.

Keywords: how long should a resume be, can a resume be 2 pages, one page resume, resume length, how long should a cv be, cv length, academic cv length

The short answer is one page if you are a student or have less than about ten years of relevant experience, two pages if the second one is full of proof for the job you want. Almost every guide says that, and it is a fair rule.

What the guides skip is everything you can check. How many words actually fit on a page? Does resume software count pages? Which employers write a page limit into their postings? We measured the first, opened our own scorer for the second, and searched 6,383 job postings for the third, then 701 more in the UK. If you came here asking how long a CV should be, the UK answer is the same as for a resume. The academic answer changed in 2026, and we cover both below.

## Our resume checker counts words, not pages

Most articles tell you what "the ATS" prefers. We can only speak for the scorer we wrote, so here is exactly what it does with length.

When you build a resume in the HiredFolio editor and scan it against a saved job, a formatting check makes up 15% of the score. It starts at 100 and subtracts points. Two of those deductions are about length, and both count words:

- **Under 150 words.** Minus 20 points, flagged as critical.
- **Over 1,200 words.** Minus 8 points, flagged as a suggestion.

Pages never enter the calculation. Because formatting weighs 15%, the long-resume penalty moves your overall score by about 1 point out of 100, and the short-resume penalty by 3. The rest of the score is keyword match (40%), required skills (20%) and how well your experience fits the job (25%). The AI model that judges experience is told not to comment on length at all.

The free [ATS checker](/ats-checker), where you upload a PDF, applies no length rule. Its extractor knows how many pages your file has, but the score does not use that number. If your resume reads cleanly and covers the posting's keywords, a three-page PDF and a one-page PDF are scored on the same terms.

That is one scorer, ours. Other systems may behave differently, and we cannot open them. So the next time a guide says "the ATS rejects two-page resumes", ask which system, and how it would know where your page ends.

## How many words fit on one page

Page counts depend on settings, so we measured them. We built a plain, single-column resume: name, contact line, a two-sentence summary, jobs with four bullets of 10 to 18 words each, education and skills. Headless Chrome printed it to PDF. We added one bullet at a time until a second page appeared, then counted the words on the last version that fit on one page.

| Paper  | Font          | Size  | Margins | Line spacing | Words on one page |
| ------ | ------------- | ----- | ------- | ------------ | ----------------- |
| Letter | Arial (Arimo) | 12 pt | 1 in    | 1.4          | 265               |
| Letter | Lato          | 11 pt | 1 in    | 1.4          | 325               |
| Letter | Arial (Arimo) | 11 pt | 1 in    | 1.2          | 383               |
| Letter | Arial (Arimo) | 11 pt | 0.75 in | 1.2          | 443               |
| Letter | Times (Tinos) | 11 pt | 0.75 in | 1.2          | 483               |
| Letter | Lato          | 10 pt | 0.5 in  | 1.2          | 574               |
| Letter | Arial (Arimo) | 10 pt | 0.5 in  | 1.15         | 587               |
| A4     | Arial (Arimo) | 11 pt | 1 in    | 1.2          | 396               |

Arimo and Tinos are free fonts built with the same character widths as Arial and Times New Roman, so the counts carry over. Measured by HiredFolio on October 1, 2026.

The spread is more than double. A "one-page resume" at 12 point with generous margins holds 265 words, and the same page at 10 point with half-inch margins holds 587. So "keep it to one page" means anywhere from about 270 to 590 words, depending on how hard you squeeze. Squeezing has a cost, covered further down.

### Read the scorer's band in pages

Put the two together. At a common 11 point, one-inch setting, 383 words fill a page. Our 150-word floor is less than half a page at any setting in the table. The 1,200-word ceiling is about three full pages at 11 point, and two dense pages at 10 point. A normal two-page resume is nowhere near it.

The numbers line up with an outside source. In ResumeGo's recruiter study (more on it below), the one-page test resumes ran 350 to 500 words and the two-page versions 700 to 850.

## Who actually sets a page limit

If length rules mattered to employers, you would expect to see them in job postings. So we looked.

### No page limit in 6,383 private-sector postings

On October 1, 2026 we downloaded every open posting from the public job boards of 32 companies that hire through Greenhouse or Lever, among them Stripe, Airbnb, Cloudflare, Figma, Dropbox, GitLab, Coinbase, Datadog, Spotify and Palantir. After removing duplicates, that left 6,383 postings. We searched each one for a page limit on the resume: "one-page resume", "resume no longer than two pages", and similar wordings.

<div class="blog-stat">

A looser search for "page" near "resume" found one posting. It said to upload a file "on the applicant page". The sample leans toward US tech companies, so read it as "tech employers do not write page limits down", not as a law of hiring. The one-page rule lives in recruiters' habits and in career advice, not in the postings themselves.

### Federal jobs have a hard two-page limit

The US federal government is the exception, and the old advice about it is now wrong. One page that ranks for this question still says federal resumes run four to six pages. That ended on September 27, 2025.

Under the Merit Hiring Plan, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) limited resumes to two pages for competitive and excepted service jobs under Title 5, whether posted on USAJOBS or elsewhere. OPM's [guidance for agencies](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/hiring-information/merit-hiring-plan-resources/agency-guidance-on-the-two-page-limit-on-resume-length/) is blunt: "If the only resume received by an applicant is longer than two pages, the applicant is ineligible for further consideration." USAJOBS no longer lets you upload or build a longer resume, as the Interior Department's [HR notice](https://ibc.doi.gov/HRD/HR-Services/Messages/09-29-2025) told applicants.

OPM's guidance also tells the USAJOBS help center to recommend Lato or a similar sans-serif font, 10 point for the text, 14 point for titles, half-inch margins, and a PDF to keep the page count fixed. Those are close to the settings in our table that hold 574 words per page. So a federal resume tops out around 1,150 words. OPM's [applicant guidance](https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/hiring-information/merit-hiring-plan-resources/applicant-guidance-on-the-two-page-resume-limit/) lists what those words must cover, including hours worked per week and month/year dates for each job.

## How long should a CV be?

It depends on which English the posting is written in. In the UK, Ireland and most of Europe, "CV" is the everyday word for what Americans call a resume, so the answer is the same one as above: one page early on, two once the second page is full of proof. In the US and Canada, a CV usually means the academic version, with every publication, grant and course you have taught. That one has no page target, but it has rules of its own now, and they are counted in characters.

### UK postings that ask for a CV: no page limit either

On October 5, 2026 we repeated our posting count for UK jobs. We looked up 50 company names on the public Greenhouse and Lever job board APIs (68 lookups across the two), downloaded every open posting, and kept those with a UK location. After removing duplicates, that left 701 postings from 22 companies, the largest being Deliveroo, Cloudflare, Stripe, Monzo, SumUp, Palantir, Spotify and Zopa. None set a page limit for the CV or resume, and none mentioned "page" within 80 characters of either word.

That is the same result as the first count, and it has the same caveat: these are mostly tech employers, and the sample says nothing about a law firm or an NHS trust. The UK civil service does not publish a page limit for CVs either. Its [CV guidance](https://www.civil-service-careers.gov.uk/how-to-write-your-cv/) says something more useful: "Your skills and experience will be scored against the essential criteria in the job advert, so make sure your information is relevant." It also warns that you may be asked to send the CV "in an anonymised format". Compare that with the US federal rule above, where a third page makes you ineligible.

So the two-page convention you read on UK career sites is a recruiter habit, not a rule anyone writes into a job ad. Two full A4 pages at 11 point hold about 790 words by our measurement above, which is a fair ceiling for a UK CV.

### Academic CVs: funders now limit characters, not pages

Guides tell academics their CV can run to 10 pages or more. For a job application at a university, that is still true, since search committees want the full list. A grant application is different. It asks for a short CV on the funder's own form, and none of the three funders we checked counts it in pages.

| Funder | What the CV is called | Limit, in the funder's words |
| --------- | --------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| NIH (US) | Biographical Sketch Common Form + NIH Supplement | "There is no page limit for the combined [...] PDF output." Personal statement "limited to 3,500 characters", up to 5 contributions to science of "up to 2,000 characters" each, honors "no more than 15 entries" |
| NSF (US) | Biographical Sketch Common Form | "Except where noted below, there is no page or character limit." Products: up to five related and up to five other, and "Only the list of ten will be used in the review" |
| UKRI (UK) | Résumé for Research and Innovation (R4RI), a narrative CV | Four modules; "The word count is specified in the funding opportunity" |

NIH made the new format compulsory for application due dates on or after May 8, 2026. From that day, its [notice NOT-OD-26-079](https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-26-079.html) says, "system warnings will change to errors that will stop any submission not using compliant Common Forms". Both US forms are generated in SciENcv, so you cannot win room back with a smaller font. A 3,500-character personal statement has the same length in Times or in Lato, at any margin.

The lesson matches the rest of this article. Funders that read thousands of CVs a year limit what goes in each field, not how many pages it fills.

## What the research on recruiters says

Two studies get quoted on every page about resume length. Both are worth reading with their method in view.

**Ladders, 2018.** The "6 seconds" and "7.4 seconds" figures come from [Ladders' eye-tracking report](https://www.theladders.com/static/images/basicSite/pdfs/TheLadders-EyeTracking-StudyC2.pdf), produced by Ladders, a job-search site. It measured an average initial screen of 7.4 seconds, up from the 6 seconds of an earlier Ladders study run during the recession. The method had two stages. In the first, recruiters who did not know they were timed sorted a stack of resumes; that is where 7.4 seconds comes from. In the second, an eye tracker followed recruiters reading resumes in a lab. The report does not say how many recruiters or resumes took part.

On length, its finding is more useful than the famous number. "An engaged recruiter will spend as much time on a second page as on the first", but time on page two "is strongly predicted by how compelling the first page is", and pages after the second did worse. Ladders kept a two-page limit for experienced candidates.

**ResumeGo, published 2019.** [This study](https://www.resumego.net/research/one-or-two-page-resumes/) put 482 recruiters, HR staff, hiring managers and executives through a simulated hiring round with printed resumes. Of the 7,712 resumes they picked, 5,375 were two pages long, which works out to 2.3 times as many as one-pagers. The gap was 1.4 times for entry-level jobs and 2.9 times for managers. ResumeGo, which sells resume writing, ran it.

There is a catch the headline drops. The two-page resumes held 700 to 850 words and the one-page resumes 350 to 500. The longer version described "a candidate with similar work experiences", but with twice the words. So the study shows that more evidence beat less. It does not show that the same content spread over two sheets wins.

Read together, the two studies agree. The first page decides whether page two gets read, and a second page helps when it adds proof.

## One page or two, by situation

| Your situation                                  | Length                           | Why                                          |
| ----------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- |
| Student, new graduate, career changer | One page | Not enough relevant proof yet to fill two |
| Up to about 10 years in one field | One page, two if dense | The convention most guides give |
| 10 years or more, technical or managerial roles | Two pages | Projects, scope and results need the room |
| US federal job (Title 5) | Two pages, hard maximum | OPM rule since September 27, 2025 |
| UK or European job asking for a CV | One page, two if dense | Same document as a resume, same convention |
| US academic job | A full CV, as long as the record | Search committees want every publication |
| Grant application (NIH, NSF, UKRI) | The funder's form | Limits are per field, in characters or words |

Two pages is a ceiling for most private-sector jobs, not a target. For the content of each section, see [how to write an effective resume](/blog/how-to-write-an-effective-resume).

## Can a resume be 2 pages?

Yes, and the research above suggests recruiters read the second page when the first one earns it. Three habits make it work:

- **Front-load page one.** Your summary, your current or most relevant job and your strongest numbers belong there. Ladders found page-two attention follows page-one interest.
- **Fill most of page two.** A second page with five lines on it reads as a resume that missed the one-page target. Either add proof or cut back to one page.
- **Put your name on page two.** Add it in the body text at the top of the second page, not in the document header.

## How to fit a resume on one page

If you are 20% over, cut before you shrink.

<div class="blog-dodont">

    </div>
  </div>
  <p class="blog-dodont-foot">Every bullet that does not prove something the posting asks for is the first thing to go.</p>
</div>

Some guides recommend two columns because they fit more on a page. Ladders listed multiple columns among the traits of its worst-performing resumes, and a text extractor can read a sidebar line by line into the middle of your experience. When our checker finds a column layout in a PDF, it flags it as a critical issue. More on that in [our guide to ATS filters](/blog/ats-resume-filters).

Three to five bullets per recent job is enough, and fewer for older ones. A bullet that runs past two lines usually holds two ideas; split it or cut one.

## Check your length before you apply

Length is the easy part to count, so count it. Paste your resume into any word counter. Under 150 words, you are leaving out evidence. Between about 270 and 590 words, you fit on one page, depending on your settings. Past 1,200, you are probably repeating yourself.

Then check what matters more than length, which is whether your resume says what the job asks for. [Our free ATS checker](/ats-checker) reads your PDF, lists the posting's keywords your resume is missing, and flags a layout it had to rebuild. It will not tell you to cut a page. It will tell you whether the words you kept are the ones the posting asks for.
