# Best resume builder websites: real renewal prices, checked

> Resume builders compared on what their own pricing pages say about renewals, what the free plan lets you download, and a two-minute test for the file they export.

The price is where people get hurt with resume builders. A $2.95 trial that renews every four weeks adds up over a job search, and on two of the builders below the free plan lets you download a plain text file, not a PDF.

So this comparison starts with what each builder's own pricing page says, quoted and dated, then gives you a test to run on any exported file. A disclosure first: HiredFolio is a resume builder too. It is in the list, with its renewal terms stated the same way as everyone else's.

## The price on the button is not the price you pay

We read the pricing page of each builder on 2026-10-02 and copied the terms word for word. Where a page did not load from our network, we say so and give no price.

_Prices from each vendor's own pricing page, checked 2026-10-02. Resume.io, Kickresume and Novoresume showed euro prices to our European connection; a US visitor may see dollars._

Two phrases in that table decide the real cost: "billed every four weeks" and "TXT only".

"Every four weeks" is not "monthly". A year holds 13 four-week periods, so the same renewal is charged 13 times, not 12. That is our arithmetic on the terms above: 13 × $23.95 is $311.35 a year at Resume Genius, against the $95.40 annual payment on the same page. At Resume.io, 13 × €24.95 is €324.35.

"TXT only" means the free plan exports a plain text file. You can paste it into a form, but you cannot attach it as the formatted resume you just designed. In practice, the free plan of those builders is a preview, and the trial is the real entry price.

Run the numbers for that median search. Resume Genius: $2.95, then $23.95 on day 14, day 42 and day 70, so $74.80 before week 12. Resume.io: €2.95, then €24.95 on day 7, day 35 and day 63, so €77.80. Neither figure is a scandal. The problem is the reader who lands the job in week 8, forgets the subscription, and finds the charge again in February.

## What the law says about cancelling a subscription

The rules matter, because they tell you what you can demand.

**In the US, the FTC's "click to cancel" rule is gone.** The Eighth Circuit struck it down on July 8, 2025 in _Custom Communications, Inc. v. FTC_: "we grant the petitions for review and vacate the Rule" ([opinion](https://ecf.ca8.uscourts.gov/opndir/25/07/243137P.pdf)). The court objected to the procedure, not the goal. The FTC reopened the subject with an [advance notice of proposed rulemaking on March 11, 2026](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2026/03/ftc-seeks-public-comment-response-advance-notice-proposed-rulemaking-regarding-negative-option).

**The older federal law still applies.** The Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act requires a seller charging a recurring fee online to disclose "all material terms of the transaction before obtaining the consumer's billing information" and to provide "simple mechanisms for a consumer to stop recurring charges" ([15 U.S.C. § 8403](https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/15/8403)). If a builder makes you phone a support line during business hours to cancel, that clause is the one to quote in your complaint.

**In the UK, new subscription rules start in January 2027.** The government confirmed on August 9, 2026 that "New rules will now come into force in January 2027" and that "A new 14-day cooling-off period will also let consumers cancel after a trial or long-term contract renews" ([gov.uk](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/pm-starts-roll-out-of-everyday-fixes-on-the-cost-of-living-ending-rip-off-discounts-and-subscription-traps)).

What to do with this, whatever your country: screenshot the pricing page the day you pay, put the renewal date in your calendar two days early, and cancel the day you download your final PDF. You can always buy again.

## Test the file, not the builder

A builder's "ATS friendly" label says little about the file it exports. One list says so outright: "We did not score writing quality, ATS parsing, or template beauty" ([Krea](https://www.krea.ai/blog/best-free-resume-builders-and-cv-makers-in-2026)).

We did run that test on our side. We exported one resume in three layouts and ran each PDF through the text extractor behind our ATS scanner. With a two-column template, the job title and its dates no longer sat next to each other in the extracted text, and the candidate's name surfaced at the 27th word. The full raw output is in [our Canva resume test](/blog/canva-resume-ats). The tool did not matter. The layout did.

Our scanner also refuses to score two kinds of file, because they look fine on screen. Some templates set the name letter by letter, so the text comes out as "C a m i l l e". Some fonts carry no usable character map, so the text comes out as symbols. Both give a parser nothing to read.

Here is the check, two minutes per builder, before you pay:

1. Export a test resume as PDF from the free plan or the trial.
2. Open it, select all (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A), copy, and paste into a plain text editor.
3. Check three things: your name is the first line, each job title sits next to its dates, and the email and phone are in the pasted text, not missing because they were in a page header.

If any of the three fails, change the template before you change the builder. A one-column template from the same tool usually passes. Then run the PDF through an [ATS checker that shows what it extracted](/ats-checker) against a real job posting, so you see the text a recruiter's software gets.

### The rest of the usual list

**Indeed.** If you already have an Indeed profile, its help page says to "choose Download to save your resume as a PDF" ([Indeed help](https://www.indeed.com/help/job-seekers/articles/11314976176141-faqs-creating-uploading-and-managing-a-resume-file?hl=en&co=US)). The page does not state a price.

**Canva.** Many of its resume templates use two columns. Run the copy-paste test above on any Canva export; our [Canva test](/blog/canva-resume-ats) shows what goes wrong and the layout that works. Canva's pricing page did not load from our network on 2026-10-02, so we give no price.

**Zety, LiveCareer, MyPerfectResume, Resume Now, Teal.** Their pages did not load from our network on 2026-10-02. Prices for them circulate on other lists, but we only publish what we read on the vendor's own page. Use the two checks above on whichever you try: the renewal sentence, and the copy-paste test.

**Word or Google Docs.** No subscription at all. A one-column document with plain headings exports cleanly. Our guide to [resume formatting](/blog/resume-formatting) covers the settings that matter to a parser.

## Should you pay a resume writer instead?

A builder lays out what you write. A writer interviews you and writes it. That is the only reason to pay the difference, and the difference is large.

Two things worth knowing before you pay a writer:

- **ZipJob's service page redirects to TopResume.** On 2026-10-02, `zipjob.com/resume-writing-services` answered with a 301 redirect to `topresume.com/resume-writing-services`. If a list ranks the two as separate options, you are comparing one checkout page with itself.
- **The CPRW credential is kept by paying dues.** The CPRW from PARWCC "costs $295 for members and $470 for non-members", and "remains valid as long as your PARWCC membership is active, with no additional renewal requirements or continuing education obligations" ([PARWCC](https://parwcc.com/professional-resume-writer-certification-cprw/)). It is earned through a timed exam graded anonymously.

Before paying either, use the free help your taxes already fund. In the US, American Job Centers "are designed to provide a full range of assistance to job seekers under one roof" ([US Department of Labor](https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/training/onestop)); services vary by state, so call your local center and ask whether it reviews resumes. In England, the National Careers Service puts you through to a DWP careers adviser on 0800 072 0288, and "Calls are free from landlines and most mobile numbers" ([National Careers Service](https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/contact-us)).

A writer earns the fee when your story is hard to tell: a career change, a long gap, an executive role where the resume is a negotiation document. For a standard application, a builder plus an hour of your own editing gets you most of the way. If you are starting from your LinkedIn profile, our piece on [what a LinkedIn resume builder keeps](/blog/linkedin-resume-builder) shows what to redo after the import.

## Quick answers

**Is a free resume builder really free?** Some are. Check the download format on the free plan before you write anything: "TXT only" means the PDF costs money.

**Can I write my resume with ChatGPT instead?** For the wording, yes. You still need a layout that exports clean text, which is the builder's job, or a plain Word document.

**Are builder resumes ATS friendly?** The file decides, not the brand. Run the copy-paste test above, and compare the free ATS scanners in our [comparison of free ATS checkers](/blog/free-ats-resume-checkers).
