# 7 Best Cover Letter Generators (2026): Real Costs Compared

> Seven cover letter generators compared on what the ranking lists leave out: the price after the trial renews, what the free plan downloads, and who may train AI on your letter.

Keywords: best cover letter generator, ai cover letter generator, free cover letter generator, cover letter writing service, cover letter builder

Search "best cover letter generator" and you get a page of rankings. Read them one after another and a pattern shows up fast. Each list was written by a company that sells a cover letter generator, and each one puts its own product first.

That does not make the lists useless. It means they skip the questions a seller has no reason to raise. What does one downloaded letter cost once the $2.95 trial renews? Does the free plan let you download anything other than a text file? Can the company use your letter to train its AI? This comparison answers those three, for seven tools, from each vendor's own pricing page and terms, checked on 2 October 2026.

## Who writes the "best cover letter generator" lists

On 2 October 2026 we read the nine ranking pages for "best cover letter generator" that would load for us. All nine were published by a cover letter tool, and all nine ranked that tool first: [Cover Letter Copilot](https://www.coverlettercopilot.ai/blog/best-ai-cover-letter-generators), [Rezi](https://www.rezi.ai/posts/best-cover-letter-generators), [Enhancv](https://enhancv.com/blog/best-cover-letter-generators/), [TailoredCV](https://tailoredcv.ai/blog/best-ai-cover-letter-generator), [ApplyArc](https://applyarc.com/blog/best-ai-cover-letter-generators-2026), [Four-Leaf](https://four-leaf.ai/blog/best-ai-cover-letter-generators-2026), [Wobo](https://wobo.ai/blog/best-ai-software-for-cover-letter-editing), [Resumly](https://www.resumly.ai/best/best-ai-cover-letter-generators) and [Click Hired](https://clickhired.ai/blog/the-best-ai-cover-letter-generators-in-2026-honest-reviews-testing). Rezi at least says so, calling its own list "pretty biased".

What they leave out follows from who wrote them. Only Resumly gave full renewal terms and pointed out that a four-week billing cycle means 13 charges a year. Enhancv, Cover Letter Copilot and ApplyArc gave renewal terms for one tool each. Rezi and TailoredCV quoted trial prices with no renewal price, and the last three gave no pricing terms at all. None of the nine said a word about what happens to the resume and letter you paste in.

We sell a cover letter generator too, and it is in the list below. The difference we can offer is method: every claim about a competitor links to that competitor's own page, and our tool gets the same treatment, limits included.

## What one downloaded letter really costs

On Resume Genius and Resume.io, the cheap entry price is a trial that turns into a subscription billed **every four weeks**, not every month. Four weeks go into a year 13 times, so a plan you forget to cancel charges you 13 times, not 12.

$311.35

after a $2.95 trial

is what a year of Resume Genius costs if the 14-day trial renews and nobody cancels: $23.95 billed every four weeks, 13 times. The same site sells 12 months for a single $95.40 payment.

Source: Resume Genius pricing page, checked 2 October 2026; 13 x $23.95 is our arithmetic

Here is the same reading for the paid tools in this comparison. Prices are the ones each vendor's pricing page showed on 2 October 2026; Resume.io and Kickresume displayed euros from our location.

| Tool | Entry price | What it becomes | A forgotten year |
| ------------- | --------------------- | --------------------------------- | ------------------------- |
| Resume Genius | $2.95 for 14 days | $23.95 every four weeks | $311.35 |
| Resume.io | €2.95 for 7 days | €24.95 every 4 weeks | €324.35 |
| Kickresume | No trial, €24 a month | €54 every 3 months, €96 every 12 | depends on plan |
| Novoresume | €21.99 for one month | Nothing: "not subscription based" | €21.99 |
| Rezi | $29 a month | Or $149 once for lifetime access | $348 on Pro, or $149 once |

Two things stand out. Novoresume's pricing FAQ answers "Will my Premium account renew automatically?" with "No, our pricing model is not subscription based", which makes it the only builder here where forgetting costs nothing. Resume.io is the opposite case: its trial is the shortest, and its FAQ says that "After 7 days if you don't cancel you are automatically subscribed to the premium monthly membership."

The free plans matter as much as the price. Resume.io's free plan allows "Only one resume and cover letter" with "Downloads only in TXT format". Novoresume's free plan says "No Cover Letter". Kickresume's free plan includes 4 matching cover letter templates and "Unlimited downloads", but its AI Writer is listed with the paid plans. A free generator that only exports plain text is fine for pasting into an application form, and useless if the employer wants a formatted PDF.

## Who may train AI on your letter

A cover letter generator receives your full work history, your name and the job you want. What the company may do with that text sits in its privacy policy, and the policies differ more than the products do.

- **Canva** says it may analyse "your activity, content, media uploads and related data in your account" to "train our algorithms, models and AI products and services using machine learning". You can switch it off: "You can manage the use of your data for training AI to improve our Service in the privacy controls page under your privacy settings." ([Canva privacy policy](https://www.canva.com/policies/privacy-policy/))
- **Resume.io** writes: "We may use your personal data to further develop our existing products and services, including artificial intelligence tools and features, or to develop new products and services." We found no dedicated opt-out in that policy. ([Resume.io privacy policy](https://resume.io/privacy))
- **Teal** commits the other way: "We do not use your personal resume content, cover letters, or other identifiable career documents to train general-purpose AI models that would be used for other customers." ([Teal terms](https://www.tealhq.com/terms))
- **Novoresume** says of the AI providers it uses: "The AI providers do not use your data to train their models." ([Novoresume privacy policy](https://novoresume.com/page/legal/privacy-policy))

If this matters to you, search the policy for "train" and "artificial intelligence" before you paste in a resume. It takes a minute, and it is the only place the answer is written down.

## The 7 generators, tool by tool

Each verdict below covers what we checked on the vendor's own pages on 2 October 2026. We did not score the letters themselves: every generator writes from what you give it, so the input matters more than the brand.

### HiredFolio

Our generator starts from a job you have saved in the HiredFolio tracker and refuses to run if that job has no description. It adds the resume you pick, then lets you set the language (English or French), one of six tones and a length in characters: 900 to 1,300, 1,300 to 2,200 or 2,200 to 3,200.

### ChatGPT or another chat assistant

Six of the nine ranking lists include ChatGPT as the free baseline, and they are right that it writes a fluent letter in seconds. It has no template and no download button, and it knows only what you paste in. Paste the posting and your resume, ask for a body of about 1,500 characters, then remove every sentence that could apply to any company. We wrote up [what a recruiter notices in a ChatGPT letter](/fr/blog/lettre-de-motivation-chatgpt) (in French), with the tics marked line by line.

## How to test any generator in ten minutes

You do not need a ranking to judge a generator. Run one real application through it and check four things:

1. **Does it ask for the job description?** A tool that only wants a job title and a company name can only write a generic letter. A generator that reads the posting can repeat its words, which is what a recruiter scanning for fit looks for.
2. **Does it invent anything?** Look for numbers, employers or tools you never mentioned. Delete them all. An invented metric is the one thing an interviewer will ask you about.
3. **What does the free plan download?** TXT, PDF or nothing. Try the download before you write, not after.
4. **What does the trial become?** Find the sentence with "renew" on the pricing page, note the date, and set a reminder for the day before.

The letter itself still needs a structure that works. Our guide on [how to write a cover letter](/blog/cover-letter-structure-example) breaks it into its parts, with a full example. It also counts what 390 real application forms ask for: 78% had an optional cover letter field, while only 5 of the posting texts mentioned a letter at all.

If the generator also builds your resume, check the file it exports before you send it. Our [Canva resume test](/blog/canva-resume-ats) shows how a nice-looking layout can scramble the text an applicant tracking system reads.

## Paying a human writer instead

Writing services are the other option, and their prices sit far above any generator. On their own pricing pages, [ResumeSpice](https://resumespice.com/pricing/resumes-cover-letters-interviews-linkedin/) lists "Cover Letter $199", [TopResume](https://topresume.com/resume-writing) sells its cheapest package with a letter, "Resume and cover letter", at $229, and [ResumeEdge](https://www.resumeedge.com/cover-letter-writing) says its cover letter "Prices start at $60".

A human writer still needs the same inputs as a generator: the posting, your resume and the stories behind your results. What you pay for is the interview that pulls those stories out of you, and a second reader. You can get both without paying. The U.S. Department of Labor puts the network at "approximately 2,300 [American Job Centers](https://www.dol.gov/agencies/eta/american-job-centers) nationwide", where the public Employment Service offers "job search assistance, help getting a job referral, and placement assistance for job seekers". Ask your nearest center whether it reviews cover letters.

A paid writer makes sense for an executive application where one letter carries a lot of weight. For a search with dozens of applications, the letter has to change with each posting, and $199 per letter does not scale.
